Congratulations to rising senior Kevin Spivey Jr. on being one of nine high school student-athletes in the state to win a 2025-2026 Heart of a Champion award for excellence during and outside of sports. Recipients were recognized by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) during a banquet on Wednesday, June 10, in Greensboro.
Spivey was praised for his ability on the wrestling mat, team commitment, perseverance through an injury, leadership, and character. The nomination went on to say the following: “Coaches and teammates describe Spivey as a cornerstone of the program at Central Carolina Academy. A team captain this past season, he has consistently led by example, demonstrating resilience and a positive attitude regardless of the outcome of his matches. Whether in victory or defeat, his sportsmanship has stood out. Beyond his own competition, Spivey has made a lasting impact by mentoring younger wrestlers in the program. He is known for his willingness to help others improve, offering guidance and encouragement to teammates just beginning their wrestling journeys. Off the mat, Spivey continues to lead in the classroom and school community. He serves as president of Club America at Central Carolina Academy, further showcasing his leadership and dedication to involvement beyond athletics.”
Spivey is the second wrestler to receive the Heart of a Champion award in the two years CCA has been eligible to compete in the NCHSAA, highlighting the wrestling program’s growing reputation for developing not only talented athletes, but also individuals of high character. Jean-Marie Murry was a 2024-2025 recipient of the award.

Congratulations to senior Lily Pressler, who committed to play soccer at Methodist University in Fayetteville during a signing ceremony Monday morning, April 20, held on the front steps of the school. Lily is the first CCA student to make a collegiate athletic commitment, giving her a place in school history. Her model as a student-athlete gives an outstanding foundation for future achievements of Soaring Eagles at the high school and collegiate levels.
Principal Greg Batten opened the ceremony with congratulations and noted the important moment for Lily and the school. Athletic Director Bob Pegram noted he has been part of many collegiate athletic signings over the years, but that this one was special for him because none of the others was a first for a school. He also complimented Lily’s family support. The CCA women’s soccer coach, Riley Bohn, talked about how Lily has developed as an athlete, highlighted her leadership and success on the field, and shared how the strong recruitment from Methodist impacted Lily’s final decision. Coach Bohn also encouraged everyone to continue following Lily’s path in soccer at Methodist by attending matches.

Middle and high school sports teams are making the most of the spring sports season. The Soaring Eagles have nine different teams in 2026. Middle school students are participating in baseball, co-ed golf, girls’ soccer, and co-ed tennis (intramural). High school baseball students are playing men’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, and men’s volleyball (club). At times games and matches have to be rescheduled due to weather conditions or schedule conflicts of competitors. The sports calendar is updated as changes occur. Everyone is encouraged to come to games/matches and cheer on the student-athletes and coaches.

The Eagles’ winter sports season has ended, and honors have been announced. Congratulations to all of the wrestling, basketball, and cheerleading teams along with their coaches for a strong commitment and representing CCA Athletics well.
Central Tar Heel Athletic Conference Honors
The varsity women’s basketball team won the conference Sportsmanship Award. Alyssa Gunter earned All-Conference honors. On the varsity men’s basketball team, Jax Gaddy earned All-Conference honors. Tyler Hunter, Jean-Marie Murry and Charlie Wright were named All-Conference in wrestling.
NCHSAA Recognitions
Two varsity wrestlers, Jean-Marie Murry and Charlie Wright, qualified for the 2026 NC High School Athletic Association 1A/2A Individual State Championships after placing third and second for their weight classes in the East Region, respectively. Murry went on to finish fourth in the state in the 165-pound 1A/2A class.

The winter sports teams of basketball, cheerleading, and wrestling are winding down their fourth year in Soaring Eagles Athletics. Spring sports tryouts can start on Tuesday, February 17.
The Athletic Department hosted a spring sports parent meeting on Tuesday, February 10, at 6:00 pm for families of students interested in playing middle and high school sports this spring. (Families of students who have played fall or winter sports do not need to attend.)
Any students planning to tryout for a spring sport must have the required forms submitted (including having an active physical) to be eligible to participate in workouts, practices, and games. CCA uses DragonFly for its documentation. The athletic department has provided registration instructions for first-time users. Anyone with questions should contact Athletic Director Bob Pegram via email (rpegram@ccasanford.org) or by phone (984-977-9455).
CCA is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Central Carolina Academy high school teams are in the Central Tar Heel 1A Conference. Middle school teams are not in a conference this year; however, they compete against several of the middle schools that are affiliated with the high schools in CCA’s conference.

All athletes trying out for any athletic team will be required to have a current Athletic Physical and the Concussion Awareness Form completed and on file in the Athletic Office (room 119) before they can participate. Athletes are also required to have a Dragonfly Account (Dragonflymax.com) to access required forms like the Concussion Awareness Form. Tryouts will last for three consecutive weekdays and last approximately two hours each day. Athletes are strongly encouraged to come prepared with all necessary attire and a positive attitude for all practices to improve their chances of making the team.
Athletes trying out for wrestling are required to pass a hydration test and have a skinfold test completed before they can participate in practice sessions. Hydration testing will be held outside of the restrooms on the first floor; wrestlers should be hydrated before coming.

Congratulations to the Soaring Eagles women’s golf team on being the 2025 North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) East Regional Co-Champion with East Carteret High School. The CCA team earned the honor at a match on October 20th in Washington, NC.
The team played in the 1A/2A NCHSAA women’s golf championships at Gates Four Golf & Country Club in Fayetteville on Monday and Tuesday, October 27 & 28. They finished fourth in the state to cap off a fantastic 2025 season.
